PRAYING FOR WOMEN IN INDIA
Many women in India are expected to please their parents, husband, in-laws and children. Low social status, early marriage, poverty and too many children are the realities faced by many rural women. The literacy of women is at an appallingly low level. Many of the Dalit women, who are considered untouchable, desire to die and come back to earth as an animal so they will be better treated.
Statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau reflect an increase in crimes against women such as cruelty, sexual harassment, rapes, dowry deaths and abortions of female babies. More women are reporting crimes, police are receiving sensitivity training and the public is being educated on proper ways to relate to women. With more women in the workplace, men are struggling with relational problems at work and at home.
Of the one billion people living in India, less than three percent are Christians. In a land of different religious, cultural and linguistic scenarios, Project Hannah’s Women of Hope programs offer HOPE that God can lead people from darkness to light. Prayer groups gather to encourage women to be a part of God’s work by praying for women around the world.
In a small village in Orissa, there are 55 families from a Christian background. The village lacks adequate facilities for transportation, roads, electricity, schools, hospital and a post office. Most of the entire village listens to TWR radio programs, including Women of Hope. Both young and old are blessed by the programs. TWR staff travel to meet with listeners, and participants from the entire village attend. While there, they visit all 55 homes and pray for the families. The Holy Spirit leads many to a saving knowledge of the Lord.
