Praying for Women Who Don’t Read

In Biblical times and in the early church, most people could not read. Biblical history was written to be read aloud to the masses and was sung and internalized by the people. Jesus, a master communicator, used stories and symbols to teach the masses. Today, four billion people still learn through hearing and not from reading.

Many women around the world are primarily oral communicators, where verbal communication is the preferred method of teaching and learning. Some women speak several languages and are able to memorize large amounts of information. Many who are learning to read struggle to understand what they read. While some oral communicators can read and write, many don’t. People in their communities rarely use these skills to communicate on a daily basis in their relationships and to pass on values and truths.

Oral communicators who sincerely want to follow Jesus are often without proper teaching because there are few who can teach them orally. They need to hear the Bible’s truths through methods of communication familiar to them, such as stories, songs and repetition. When they hear it in ways they understand, they internalize it and can respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompting and receive salvation and direction in their daily lives through Jesus Christ.

Project Hannah’s passion is to make the truths of the Bible accessible to oral communicators through radio programs. Its Women of Hope program offers compassion and hope in 55 languages through sisterly advice similar to having a conversation with a friend.
